This list of the best bakeries in New York City was written by Antonina Pattiz, a local of NYC and the founder of New York Simply (an official partner of Apple Maps!). We’re happy to have you here!
I’m a glutton for sweets (I promise I have some redeeming qualities) and if there’s one dessert that brings me to my knees, it’s a warm chocolate chip cookie. And you know how it goes living in a city like New York — you can’t help but wonder, what’s the best cookie in NYC? Tempted to answer the question for myself, I embarked on a year-long assignment to try as many cookies as I could stomach, this list is a roundup of the best I found.

The Best Cookies in New York City
(Table of Contents)
Culture Espresso
Perhaps the most unassuming cookie in New York City. It sits patiently behind a glass counter in a small Midtown cafe awaiting the next customer smart enough to order it.
In my opinion, the ideal cookie has a slightly crispy edge with a soft, chewy center. Thankfully, the cookies at Culture Espresso (packed with rich, dark chocolate chunks, striking an ideal balance between sweet and salty) checks all the boxes.
Baked throughout the day, these delightful cookies are served warm when ordered. The irresistible aroma makes it impossible to walk by without popping in for a treat. I consider this a must-visit spot for cookie aficionados (the coffee is great too!).

Dominique Ansel Bakery
In true Dominique Ansel fashion, nothing can be done half-way (cronut, anyone?). Innovate or perish and locals can’t help but benefit. As such, is anyone surprised to see Dominique Ansel Bakery mentioned on a list of the best cookies in NYC?
Hardly.
During my last visit, I was intrigued by the cookie and the cashier nudged me in the right direction by mentioning that it was his favorite item on the menu. What was I supposed to do?
Um, I was not prepared for the wild ride. The chewy yet dense texture was everything I didn’t know I needed. The perfect unison of flavors between the rich butter and chocolate chunks made me convinced that this is the most perfect cookie in New York.
As I walked around SOHO with my prized procession in hand, it didn’t take long to realize that this cookie alone is worth going out of the way for. It’s that good.

Seven Grams Caffe
Boasting a long list of accolades and awards centered around their baked goods, there’s no denying that Seven Grams Cafe offer some of the best chocolate chip cookies in New York City. The star of the show is the Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookie, which strikes a perfect balance between sweet and salty (there’s a generous amount of chocolate chips and a sprinkle of sea salt on top).
Baked fresh daily, these cookies are known for their soft, chewy texture, making them a hit with those who come in for coffee but end up staying for the treats. Who can blame them!

Good to know: Seven Grams Caffe makes some of the best vegan cookies in New York City.
Levain Bakery
People love to hate on the best, but the fact remains: Levain makes the BEST chocolate chip cookies in New York City — there, I said it. Rarely, in a city offering so many options, does a place stand so far above the rest, and yet — here we are. After visiting 35+ times over the years, I can confidently tell you that Levain Bakery makes the best cookies in New York City.
Warm, gooey, rich and chocolatey — Levain has re-imagined the childhood classic in a way most bakeries dream of. What’s more, the cookies are so big you can split one between two people. There’s a few locations in town, but the original is on the Upper West Side (on 74th Street and Amsterdam).

Jacques Torres
Jacques Torres is a chocolate shop first and foremost. So, should we act surprised when they end up creating one of the best cookies in New York City? Unlike the other cookies mentioned on the list so far, Jacques Torres’s version is mostly chewy and seldom served warm.
I must admit, upon first glance I assumed the cookies would be dry due to the texture (it was so flat!). So imagine my surprise when I bit into a satisfyingly chewy treat chock full of chocolate discs (as opposed to chips). The best!
Since this cookie is MASSIVE I was hoping to save some of it for the next day but quickly realized there was no chance. I ate the whole thing before dinner and was even tempted get more the next day. Of all the NYC cookies I sampled to create this list of the best, the chocolate chip cookie at Jacques Torres surprised me the most.

Breads Bakery
There’s a few Breads Bakery locations spread across NYC, but the one in the Upper East Side is the most special. The reason? To celebrate their newest location (at the time), the owner decided to create a special treat exclusive to the UES location — a unique twist on the iconic black-and-white cookie.
Think of it as a mix between a cookie and croissant (that’s the best way I can think to describe it). Flaky and chewy, the texture is very unique. When paired with the sweetness of the sugar glaze, it’s simply perfection. This is undoubtedly one of the most popular cookies in New York City (they sell out by noon most days). However, you might get lucky if you show up while a fresh batch is being pulled from the oven.

The Good Batch
To call this Brooklyn bakery a neighborhood staple is an understatement. It’s hard to remember what locals did for cookies before the Good Batch showed up in 2010. The Tahini chocolate chunk from the Good Batch is what dreams are made of. The tantalizing hint of salt and nuttiness sets this apart from traditional chocolate chip cookies in the best way possible.
If that doesn’t sound like your thing, fret not. The Good Batch has a great rotation of interesting cookies, like the unique Nutellagraham cookie (graham cookie rolled in candied hazelnuts and cocoa nibs, stuffed with Nutella, and finished with sea salt).
Local’s Tip: The Good Batch offers some of the best vegan and gluten free cookies in New York City.

Maman
Originally started as a French cafe in SoHo, Maman quickly became famous for serving some of the most delicious baked goods in the city. But what really put them on the map was Oprah listing their nutty chocolate chip cookie as one of her favorite things in 2017. The cookies are crispy on the outside and wonderfully gooey on the inside. And you know how it goes, if these cookies are good enough for Oprah, they’re good enough for me.
Funny Face Bakery
This colorful and playful cookie shop breaks all the rules and specializes in creating the most absurdly decorated sugar cookies. You can get a cookie created of your favorite TV character or even your own face! The best part, the cookies actually taste good (as we all know, that’s not typically the case when something becomes a viral sensation).
The interior is just as vibrant and cute as the cookies. For those not in the mood for something silly, this bakery also sells traditional cookies. I highly recommend the s’mores cookie (chocolate chunks, crunchy graham crackers and toasted marshmallows), it’s a masterpiece!

Im sorry levain is not number one. I think the cookie is good but not #1. Honestly, Seven gram should be #1. Also seven gram’s olive oil cake is amazing and their gluten free option is delicious.
